What's new in Jiglu June 2009

For users

My Home

Your personal home page has been redesigned to give a better overview of the activities taking place in your spaces and to allow you to better manage any tasks that you have:

  • The main column has been replaced with an activity stream, reporting on new threads, new thread replies, new knowledge entries, updated knowledge entries and updated profiles in your spaces. You can control which spaces are included in the stream by selecting the 'My Home content' option in My Preferences.
  • The list of the first few tasks in your taskbox at the top right has been replaced by a summary of the tasks, making them easier to prioritise. This also shows any invitations you have been sent to join a space.
  • The lists of your own spaces and the spaces that you have joined are now shown in the right-hand column. (Don't forget you can also switch to a different space by selecting the link on your name at the top of each page.)
  • A new feed is available from My Home for your personal activity stream, so you may no longer need to subscribe to feeds for individual spaces.

My Taskbox

  • As well as being sent invites to join a space by e-mail, you will now also find a task in your taskbox where you can confirm or decline the request.
  • You can now filter the tasks in your taskbox according to the type of resource they deal with, such as members, discussion messages or knowledge entries.
  • You can now deal with multiple tasks at one time by selecting the appropriate action from the taskbox index, rather than having to go through each task in turn.

Space home page

  • Sections in the space home page now include an icon to let you better see what kind of information they contain.
  • A new feed is available from the space home page with an activity stream of the recent activities for that space.

Discussion and knowledge

  • Content from approved external sites can now be embedded in discussion messages and knowledge entries. Those currently available include YouTube, Google Calendar, Google Maps and Flickr slideshows, but other services can be added on request. When you edit a message or entry the HTML editor includes a new 'cog' button next to the image button. This will open up a window allowing you either enter the service details and URL or paste the code to embed direct from the other site.
  • When a message or entry contains attached images you will now see a carousel of thumbnails after the text. Clicking on an thumb will then open up the full image where you can then browse through all the images. Previously images were included in full after the text of a message, which didn't work so well when you had a lot.
  • The HTML editor used for editing discussion messages and knowledge entries has improved support for pasting from Microsoft Word.
  • When you select an attachment to add to a message or entry an additional file selector will now appear on the page. This allows you to add multiple files much faster.
  • If your discussion message or knowledge entry requires approval before it can be published, you will now be told when you submit it.
  • Improved links have been added to the sidebar when viewing a discussion message, discussion thread or knowledge entry to better show where entries have been started from messages or threads have been started by responding to an entry. Icons have also been added to the sidebar to show you what kind of information each link is.
  • When viewing a discussion message or knowledge entry the ten most-recent responses are now listed in the sidebar, along with a link to view all the responses.
  • When viewing a knowledge entry that uses headings in its content, a contents section will be automatically generated in the sidebar allowing you to quickly jump to a particular heading.

Membership

  • When you try and view a private or open space you will now be told if you can ask to join that space.
  • If you have been sent an invite to join a space but have not yet confirmed then you will be told when you view that space.
  • If you have already asked to join a space but have not yet been approved then you will be told when you view that space.

General

  • You can now upload a photo for your profile using the Photo option on your My Preferences page.
  • Improved support has been added for the Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.5, Google Chrome and Apple Safari 4 browsers.
  • A number of minor fixes have been made throughout the product along with further improvements to error reporting when an action could not be carried out.

For space administrators

New spaces

  • When you create a new space the form will now tell you if the identifier chosen for the space is already in use.

Members

  • You can now view all the recent invitations that have been sent in a space by selecting the 'View recent member invites' link in the member index. This will show who was invited, who invited them, when they were invited and whether or not they have accepted.

Settings

  • Settings have been split into basic settings, advanced settings and additional options.
  • A new setting is available in the 'Access and membership' settings page to control who is allowed to contribute to a space: all members, all members but with content approved by a moderator first, or only those chosen by an administrator.
  • There is a new Privacy settings page where you can choose whether or not e-mail addresses of members are displayed in the space and whether or not members that have not added a profile will appear in the member index. Note that e-mail addresses will always be shown to administrators of a space and will never be shown to users that have not logged on. This also now applies to outgoing feeds as well.
  • A new 'activity stream' section is available in the home page and newsletter editors.
  • When you create a new space you will now find the default newsletter has been activated - members will still need to decide whether they want to receive the newsletter or not. The information that the default newsletter contains has also been improved.
  • A new 'rich text' option is available for profile headings. This allows users to enter information using the HTML editor.

Activity logs

  • You will now find links on the discussion message, knowledge entry, tags and members indexes to let you view the recent activity that has taken place with those resources. You can still get access to view all the activities that have taken place in a space by following the 'Space activity' link in the Settings page.
  • We now record in the activity log when discussion areas, profile headings, banned addresses and newsletters are edited. Changes to automated tags are no longer logged.
